Mehdi Ouariti Montreal artist, El Mehdi Zerouali Ouariti uses his medium to promote messages of peace, unity, love, and political awareness. Mehdi, a 22 year old Moroccan, moved to Canada in 2001. Moving from an Islamic country to a non-Islamic country, he realized how distorted the perception of Islam has become, and decided to use his artistic talents to educate people about Islam, to remind Muslims about the teachings of Islam, and to express his political opinions. In the past two years, since he started showcasing his work, Mehdi has held two exhibitions. His sincere intentions and efforts to remind people of the teachings of Islam, and his boldness at presenting stark, politically-charged images have yielded nothing but positive responses. In this interview with ParadigmCafe, Mehdi discusses the inspirations, motivations, and ambitions for his work. ParadigmCafe: There are many reasons why one would become an artist; to express emotions or to make a statement. What would you say your reasons were? Mehdi: I believe that it is the responsibility of each Muslim to spread the proper message of Islam. After I came to Canada, I realized how hard it can be for many Muslims to practice their Islam, so I wanted to become a reminder. I wanted to remind people of the teachings of Islam, how they can be applied as solutions to the many major problems of this world, and to promote unity and respect amongst Muslims. ParadigmCafe: What would you say is the inspiration for your work? Mehdi: Current social and political issues. When I see what's going on in the world, it inspires me to make a statement, to bring about change in people's attitudes. ParadigmCafe: What do you hope to achieve through your work? Mehdi: To open people's eyes to what is going on in the world. To make them reflect upon what is really important in life. In my more political designs, I want to show people the injustices and oppressions that are going on. ParadigmCafe: What do you feel is the main theme of your work? Mehdi: I would say the main message is to spread the words of Peace, Love, and Unity. ParadigmCafe: I understand that you've had two showings this past year, what type of feedback have you received? Mehdi: Alhamdulilah, I have received very good feedback. People have told me they really liked my work and appreciate the messages that they convey. ParadigmCafe: So what are your future plans? Mehdi: Insha'Allah I will continue doing designs and producing more artwork until I see all the Muslims united. I believe if we want to be respected, we must be united. Mehdi's Gallery
